Insurance Blog Week In Review January 9-15, 2007

It’s been a busy week for so many people in the United States. The weather has been a huge problem with snow, ice and unusually cold temperatures. Get ready to pay a lot more for Oranges and Avocado’s after the deep freeze in Southern California.

Many homeowners have suffered the Midnight Disaster, including my little brother. Caught completely off guard with freezing temperatures and a ruptured pipe in the attic. Thankfully, he was able to Ask Anna (or sissy) for help in this matter!

When my brother woke up to find boxes falling out of his attic and water flooding his home at first he was paralyzed and didn’t know what to do. He carries a $1,000.00 deductible for his homeowner policy and thought he would need to pay this out of his pocket in order to get help. His budget is tight and he didn’t think he would be able to get the work started until his payday! Which is today, and his home would have been damaged severely had he not acted immediately!

PointInsurance Term Of The Week:

Mitigate: verb mitigated, mitigating

1. law.
To partially excuse something or make it less serious.
Thesaurus: relieve, lessen, moderate, allay, assuage, ease, dull, mollify, palliate, slake, subdue; Antonym: aggravate, exacerbate, increase.
2. To make (pain, anger, etc) less severe.

This brings to mind one of the big reasons Insurance Companies look at a customers Insurance Credit Score. When someone has the means to mitigate their losses, the damages are generally much less. The simple fact my little brother currently has damaged credit caused him to pause before getting help. Insurance companies realize that consumers without access to credit may often respond this way and delay. There is a very valid reason insurance companies offer those with better credit lower premiums, being able to call for help and whip out a credit card does lower the costs in many situations. Had my brother waited until today to get someone into his home his losses would have been horrible and the possibility of mold very high.

We also had a Question from a Families.com member on one of the Ask Anna blogs. The question is damages suffered in an accident in Pennsylvania. I have been working on getting some information out about No-Fault Auto insurance and found that in two states, Pennsylvania and New Jersey drivers have a choice between No-fault or the traditional liability insurance systems. I would recommend anyone in these states to review and consider carefully the type of Auto Insurance you need and are willing to pay for.

If you know someone who is or has been a victim of Domestic Violence they may find empowerment and support with a program sponsored by Allstate that Empowers Survivors of Domestic Violence.

I had some great questions this week for the Ask Anna Blogs, starting with a premium payment question, and notice of non-renewal. Keep the questions coming the first few weeks of these Blogs!

For the next two-weeks I will be visiting with my mom, hopefully the ice on our roads clear enough that I can pick her up at the air port this eventing! I will be checking my Private Messages, and comments so keep the questions coming! A guest Blogger will be sharing some of her experiences with Health Insurance so keep an eye out for these blogs written from a consumers point of view!
