Mirrors can add a lot to your home, from making it seem larger to offering a convenient way to check yourself before you leave your home. But to make the most of the positive power of mirrors, make sure to place them purposefully, strategically and in the right shapes and sizes for the space. You don’t want to wind up with a dated or unflattering look (remember the wall of mirrors that was so popular in the 80s?).
First Select Your Area
Where do you want to place a mirror, and what do you want its purpose to be? An entryway mirror can add light and brighten up the usually dreary entryway space.
In the living room, the first instinct might be to place a mirror above a sofa or mantle, but consider other places as well in this room, such as a tall mirror against a long wall or a cluster of smaller mirrors mixed with artwork or photographs.
The bedroom usually means practicality when it comes to mirrors, such as full-length one hung on a door or a dresser mirror for getting ready in the morning. You can also use mirrors to add interest in the room or bring in more light in the morning.
Next Select Your Type
There are so many types and variations of mirrors that it should be hard to find something that really reflects (ha) your style, interests and needs. While you can get standard mirrors at pretty much any big box store, department store or discount store, taking some time to really hunt down the perfect mirrors will be worth it in the end. Search online, at thrift store and antique shops and even catalogues to find the perfect match.
Mirrors come in three general types: small hanging mirrors, large hanging mirrors and large mounting mirrors. That doesn’t mean that you can’t mix and match as needed!
