Young Men: How Ward Members Can Help With an Eagle Project

Every young man who wants to receive his Eagle needs to complete an Eagle Project. The young man and his family have to complete a lot of work to achieve Eagle. Ward members can also support a young man in receiving his Eagle. The work and planning for an Eagle project is the young man’s responsibility, but he does need help along the way.

1) It is the young man’s responsibility to raise funds in order to complete an Eagle project. He might go about it several different ways. He may send out letters to business owners and others who he knows asking for monetary donations or he may plan a fundraiser. When you are able you can help him achieve his goal by donating money or time to help with the fundraiser. If you do donate money it should only be an amount that you are comfortable doing so. If you are not able, do not feel badly.

2) A young man may ask for donations for supplies needed to complete his project. If you have the supplies and the means you may want to donate them to the project.

3) A part of the Eagle project involves supervising people in completing a service project. You may be asked to come out and participate in the service project. If you are available, this is a great way to help. When you go remember that the young man is in charge of the project. Things may be disorganized or inefficient. It is not your place to step in and take over, but rather to follow the directions of the young man in charge.

4) You may be asked to give advice or to teach the young man how to complete a certain skill. In some ways you may be considered a mentor to the project. When you help this way it is important that you do not actually take over the planning of the project.

These are ways that each of us can help the young men in our wards achieve Eagle Scout. Scouts are really appreciative of those who volunteer their time to help them complete the project. The projects are also a great outreach to the community.
