Fitness Can Be Fun

When you think of the word “fitness,” what adjectives come to mind? Boring? Tedious? What about fun? Is that a word you link to fitness? Not many people do but the truth is that fitness really can be fun.

The problem is that we put fitness in a box. We look at it in one way, nothing more than exercise. But exercise doesn’t have to be a daily regiment that becomes drudgery. There are so many ways to exercise and not even realize you are doing it because it’s so much fun.

Think of all the new fitness classes that have emerged, such as Zumba. Or even water aerobics can be a lot of fun. What about a dance class? Even if it’s not offered at a gym, dance is a form of exercise yet an activity that can be very enjoyable.

Jumping on a trampoline, swinging a hula hoop around your waist, rollerblading, skiing…these are just a few ways that you can make fitness fun. You don’t even think about the number of calories you are burning, yet the reality is that you are.

The fun in fitness can be increased when you share the experience with others, such as your family. How about bringing back the lost art of play?

I noticed the other day when I was flipping through the television stations, that Nickelodeon had a sort of “black out,” where no shows were playing. I believe it was National Play Day or something like that. The point was that they were encouraging kids to go out and play, rather than sit down in front of the television. I thought that was a great idea.

Parents need to be instilling into children the necessity of playing. It keeps them active and off the couch. We are the greatest example to our children. If they see us enjoying fitness because its fun, they are more likely to join in.

What new FUN fitness activity can you try?
