France’s President Courts Famous Model—Is a Wedding in the Works?

If you ask supermodel Carla Bruni’s mother then the answer is “yes.”

At least that’s what is being trumpeted on the front page of France’s “Le Parisien.” According to Bruni’s mother, Marisa Borini, official confirmation could come as early as January 1st.

If you haven’t been following the whirlwind (and slightly bizarre) romance between French President Nicolas Sarkozy and model-turned-singer-songwriter Bruni then allow me to get you up to speed.

Less than three months ago the 52-year-old Sarkozy divorced his second wife Cecilia. Then, about a month later he met the 39-year-old former supermodel at a dinner party in Paris. Since then the two have been inseparable.

Adding a strange twist to this entire tale is that the couple has really been more of a threesome thanks to the very visible presence of Bruni’s mother. According to French newspapers, who have following the romance of the country’s president with understandable intensity, Bruni’s mother has been “heavily involved” in the development of her daughter’s month-old relationship with Sarkozy. In fact, the paparazzi documented Borini chaperoning the couple’s outings to Versailles and Disneyland Paris. In addition, his girlfriend’s mom accompanied Sarkozy to the Vatican earlier this month.

Am I the only one that finds this a bit weird—a mother chaperoning her 39-year-old daughter on dates with the 52-year-old president of France?

What’s more, it appears Bruni’s mom has loose lips.
Borini has already granted interviews to a number of publications telling reporters that her daughter is “living a true love story” and that Bruni “could very well end up with Nicolas.”

That’s nothing compared to what Borini told Italian news outlets earlier this month. Back then she shared the news that her daughter had received a marital proposal from Sarkozy – with a New Year’s acceptance deadline.

And today “Le Parisien,” ran a front-page story that included quotes from Borini saying she participated in pre-vacation discussions with the couple concerning how they envision Bruni’s future role.

“If Carla becomes the first lady of France, she’ll have to keep space and time for herself to write,” says her mom. “She needs to write her poems, compose music, record her albums. The same with her other obligations she may have, she’ll need to arrange her time.”

The prospective mother-of-the-bride added, “I think that the President of the Republic doesn’t just see the beautiful girl in her and that he has great respect for her artistic side. We’ve already spoken about that together and he’s totally in agreement.”

As for the purported Christmas Day proposal, Sarkozy’s reps refuse to comment on the president’s personal life. Though, I’m sure they won’t be staying mum for long considering on the day after Christmas Bruni showed up to an official engagement with Sarkozy sporting a pink diamond solitaire ring on her left hand.

No word on what Bruni’s 6-year old son Aurelian makes of his mom’s recent romance.

What do you make of it?
