School Daze

Well, the preschooler went to school. This week, we seem to have been living at the unschooling alternate school that will be my five-year-old’s home for a few hours every week. This is all part of the intake process, but it’s making my head spin. On Tuesday, she loved it. The school was almost quiet, and the children who were there were all new to the school and played fairly well together. She had a great time, and by the end of the morning she informed me that I could stay down the hall and she would play somewhere else, … Continue reading

Helping Kids Pack for College

Did you see “Toy Story 3” this summer? I did… twice. I cried…twice. Oh yes I did. When Andy was saying goodbye to his mom before leaving for college, I couldn’t hold back the tears. Never mind that my daughter is just 6 years old and promised me that I could live with her in her college dorm room if I wanted. Ah… sweet, innocent six. Right now tens of thousands of college co-eds are returning to campus in anticipation of the new school year and of those students nearly a third will be living in university housing, which means … Continue reading

Keeping Your Faith at College – Part 2

Last month I looked at keeping your faith at college. I’m going to make a few more suggestions in this area today. Don’t cut yourself off from opportunities. Just because you’ve always belonged to one denomination doesn’t necessarily mean that’s the right one for you. When our daughter went to university she, like a few others, I know found she was not fitting in to the Anglican Church she attended. She got lost in the sheer size of the congregation and found it hard to mix. After a while she opted out and went along to a Baptist church which … Continue reading

Long Distance Education

Sometimes instead of going away to attend college, circumstances like health, work or family reasons may dictate another alternative – that of long distance education. For me, as a mature aged student, this was an option I chose for several reasons. The first was that at the time I had a small child and didn’t want to out her into care so I could get my degree. I knew with a long distance learning I could study and work at my own pace and fit it in around home and family schedules. It took me a little longer to get … Continue reading

The Daycare in the Future

Today a future reality became present one, momentarily, as my wife and I briefly toured the daycare that will house our son at the beginning of next semester. We entered through the doors, took off our coats and hats, abandoned our stroller, and walked into the room for the babies who cannot yet crawl. While my wife and I knew the day would come when our son would need to be in daycare our visit today made that future reality much clearer. My wife and I are not excited about the prospect of daycare. We’d much rather have our son … Continue reading

Video Based Instruction Ideas

My 13 year old has decided that if the curriculum is not video based she does not want to be bothered with it. Over the years I guess I have spoiled her with internet based animation type curriculum like that at Time4learning, and Brainpop cartoons, and math programs like Khan Academy, but her decision to forgo all other forms of curriculum to just watch videos caught me off guard. It’s not that she doesn’t like to read. She reads at least 100 pages a day and carries a book with her where ever she goes. When we were enjoying California … Continue reading

Relief Society: BYU’s Women’s Conference

Every year at the beginning of May BYU puts on a Women’s Conference. It is a short two-day conference that takes place on campus. This year the conference is April 20 and May 1, 2009. Additionally there are service projects that you can participate in while you attend the conference. This year the projects will be set up in rooms where you can also watch different class presentations while you serve. This conference has many presentations that focus on living the gospel and helping your family. The presentations are always uplifting and may offer spiritual insight into doctrine or they … Continue reading

Fuzz Therapy at School

There’s an old Calvin and Hobbes comic that I’ve always loved: Calvin comes in after a long, horrible day and finds Hobbes (his stuffed tiger) snoozing on the floor. Calvin buries his face in the tiger’s tummy and sits up with a smile on his face. “Ahhhh… fuzz therapy,” he says. Studies have shown that pets are great when it comes to relieving stress. Whether you’re old or young, healthy or infirm, a pet can be a huge mood booster and stress reliever. Pets who live in assisted living facilities help residents come out of their shells. A new study … Continue reading

Planning Your College Course Schedule

When creating your college schedule of courses you have much more freedom than you likely did with your high school schedule. In most high schools, you choose the courses that you wish to take and a high school counselor fits them into a schedule. You have no control over which period you will get a course. However college is a little different. While classes can get full and close, you still have some control over what days and which times you take a course. Some courses are offered in the daytime and at night. Some offered two days and week … Continue reading

Do You Have Your Kids’ Halloween Costumes Yet?

It’s 8:30 AM the day before Halloween; I don’t have Tyler’s costume. If you read my previous blog, you know that we returned to New Orleans last week. I wasn’t planning to do anything for Halloween but when I picked Tyler up from school yesterday, his teacher told me that they are having a party tomorrow at the site of the new school. Right now, the lower grades (pre-K through 3rd) are attending school at a temporarily location. The rest of the school (grades 4th through 12th) has moved to the new campus. And I do mean campus. The school reminds … Continue reading
