Special Needs Blog Week in Review – June 3-9, 2012

Each week, the Special Needs Blog Week in Review gives you a quick summary of all of the blogs that appeared here in the past week. This gives you an easy way to find the blogs that you missed, or that you didn’t have time to read when they first went up. The Special Needs Podcast Roundup went up on June 4, 2012. This week, I’d like to point out an episode of The Coffee Klatch. The episode is called “Best of The Coffee Klatch – Dr. Russell Barkley – ADHD” This episode features information from Russell A. It Helps to Get the News Involved

I have noticed an interesting trend. Insurance companies quickly become more reasonable about what they will cover, and what will be charged to the consumer, after a news station gets involved. The next time your insurer tries to stick you with an outrageous bill, you might consider contacting your local news agency. I just finished reading a heartbreaking story about a mother, Melissa Sherman, whose newborn infant died in her arms minutes after birth. Baby Kaylee was born, and a doctor took her heartbeat and wrapped her into blanket before handing her to her mother. No other health care was … Continue reading

Remain Calm To Avoid Causing Alarm

The other day, there was a tornado watch for our area. We don’t have television, so my mother in law called me to let me know about it. Although I was fairly certain that no tornado was going to come spinning through our yard, I did turn the radio on so that if there were a warning I would hear it. Dylan heard me talking about it on the phone with my mother in law, and asked me “What tornado is?” I explained to him that there were going to be very big thunderstorms that afternoon, and sometimes when there … Continue reading

Florida Makes it Difficult to Get Unemployment Benefits

Florida has been making it extra difficult for people to receive unemployment insurance benefits. The state has created a series or procedural changes that appear to be designed specifically to prevent eligible people from receiving unemployment benefits. A complaint about this has been filed to the United States Department of Labor. No one wants to be unemployed. It is incredibly stressful to not have any idea how you are going to pay your bills and keep your family fed. Unemployment Insurance benefits are supposed to provide financial assistance to qualified people who have lost their jobs due to no fault … Continue reading

A Reformed Mama Bear

Michele Cheplic recently wrote a blog in which she addresses the mama bear that can come out. She shared the story of her daughter getting bit by a younger boy and the feelings that stirred up in her. I could totally relate to her blog. In fact, that mama bear in me has sometimes been an embarrassment for my children. Take the time my now 18-year-old son was in the 5th grade. As a regular volunteer at his school, I happened to come onto the playground during their lunch/recess time when I witnessed another boy pushing him. Knowing my son … Continue reading

Leave Your Kids at Home

Recently there was a story in the news about a mother who is accused of putting her five year old daughter in a tanning bed. I don’t know if this woman is guilty or not but she certainly is fond of tanning. As a single mother I’ve had to take Hailey lots of places that I probably wouldn’t have otherwise. When I went to the emergency room, not only did she go with me, she had to drive me, with only a learners permit because I was in too much pain to drive myself. I will never forget how frightened … Continue reading

Tan Mom

Snooki called her a “crazy b**ch,” while Jimmy Kimmel wondered if she fell down a chimney, and Dr. Drew speculated that she might be using shoe polish as a moisturizer. It seems everyone has an opinion on Patricia Krentcil a.k.a. “Tan Mom.” The New Jersey mother is at the center of a media firestorm following her arrest for allegedly taking her 6-year-old daughter, Anna, into a tanning booth causing the little girl to suffer serious burns. According to NBC News, 44-year-old Krentcil has been charged with second-degree child endangerment. Apparently, Child Protective Services intervened after a nurse at Anna’s school … Continue reading

Judgy McJudgerson

Isn’t it funny the things we automatically assume? There are so many stereotypes out there that by now they are almost law. People hear something and then experience it, then it must be true. This is something that all single parents struggle with, whether they are a single mom or a single dad. As hard as I try to be nonjudgmental I know I’ve made the same judgments myself. If your ex husband is a dead beat dad then somehow that’s your fault, you must have seen it coming and how could you bring children into the world knowing the … Continue reading

Special Needs Blog Week in Review – March 25 – 31, 2012

Once a week, the Special Needs Blog Week in Review gives you a quick description of everything that hit the blog in a given week. This is a great way to figure out if you missed anything that you wanted to read. It can also be helpful for those of you who want to scan through it, to find blogs that are specifically relevant to your family’s situation. Oklahoma Judge Rules School Vouchers are Unconstitutional School vouchers seem to be very controversial right now. In Oklahoma, there is a law called the Lindsey Nichole Henry Scholarships for Students with Disabilities … Continue reading

Selfish Is as Selfish Does

Just when you thought that parents were realizing that it’s not such a good idea to leave young kids alone in a car while they take care of business elsewhere, a story like this makes national headlines: BREAKING NEWS OUT OF KATY, TEXAS: SELFISH FATHER CHOOSES GUN SHOPPING OVER KID WATCHING That’s my title, and I unequivocally stand by the use of “selfish.” Here’s why. According to Texas law enforcement, a dad is being investigated by Child Protective Services after leaving his two young children in the backseat of a hot van while he spent in hour in an air … Continue reading
