Tools to Teach Kindergarten

Homeschooling your Kindergartener will come with challenges, frustration, joy, and so much fun. Kindergarteners are naturally curious so this can make learning both difficult and easy. Difficult because the child often gets distracted and wants to veer off to the left of your straight path. Easy in the sense that you get a student ready, willing, and able to learn anything and everything she sees. It’s up to you to find the proper tools to guide your little student down the right path. I hear “What curriculum should I use for my Kindergartener?” all the time. It is reasonable that … Continue reading

Homeschooling Kindergarten

This homeschooling year will be significant as I have one child entering her first year of junior high and another starting Kindergarten. This will be my third time teaching Kindergarten. I am so grateful that I have one more time to teach it after this. Teaching Kindergarten is one of my favorite things. I just love the finger paint, art projects, reading lessons, math lessons, hands on activities, and curiosity about the world these little students possess. Kindergarten is the time to build future students who are curious, creative and critical thinkers. But don’t let that pressure you one bit … Continue reading

Please Be Kind

Dear Future Pregnant Self, Congratulations, you are expecting baby number (2? 3? 10?)! Do you remember the first time you were pregnant? Your poor husband cringed every time you opened your mouth. Go ahead; ask him if he remembers that first pregnancy. “You were mean,” he’ll say. It’s time to face the truth. You were not a very nice pregnant woman. Even though you blamed your sharp tongue and bossy behavior on your raging pregnancy hormones, there is no excuse. You even made your sister cry when labor set in. That’s just wrong. This time you need to do a … Continue reading

Giving Yourself Holiday Recovery Time

I have the unfortunate habit of getting sick over the holidays. It’s almost like my body knows that there are a few days off in my future, and saves up the sickness for those days so I don’t miss whatever important things are going on before and afterwards. On the positive side, it does kind of ensure that I use my holiday time for resting and taking good care of myself. Holidays (and vacations) can be wonderful and fun… but they can also be hectic and stressful. Travel can be full of worries, anxiety, and questions: will you make that … Continue reading

Practice Random Acts of Kindness with Your Spouse

One of the fun things about marriage is that you have another person, a partner, the love or your life, for whom you can lavish attention. Here is a ready made opportunity in the form of the most important person in the world, and opportunity to give of yourself. We have heard of random acts of kindness before. Typically, in practicing this, you look for opportunities to do something nice without the chance of reward or acknowledgment. Most of the time, the person who receives the act may not know it was you that performed it or even that it … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: Working at Home with a Baby

Question: I know you have twins, can you tell me how it is to work at home with a baby? Is it easier or harder than going to work? I’m kind of chuckling as I’m writing this. Do you want to hear about the time that I had just finished a grant writing project and my baby puked all over it? The countless days when the twins cried and fussed and took turns needing to be held where I got nothing done? Or the number of days where I got to the computer to write and I was so tired … Continue reading

Be Yourself

With all of the different topics we cover here in the Home Business blog, so many are geared toward ways to make our businesses more successful and ourselves as home business owners more effective. I realized that all of this focus on what to do and how to do it can take the focus off the fact that we really do need to be who we are and do what we are meant to do–being genuine and authentic is important. No matter what else you do to build and grow your home business, you also have to be yourself… Reading … Continue reading

A Different Kind of Green for St. Patty’s Day

What does “green” mean to you? Okay, it can mean a lot of things. But for today, let’s think about “green” meaning earth-friendly. A few small changes can make your home healthier for you, your family, and the environment. Air out your new carpets BEFORE they enter the house. When you buy a carpet, ask the showroom to unroll the carpet for two weeks before they bring it into your house. This can allow volatile organic compounds (called VOCs) to escape before they enter your home and pollute your air. Look for paints that carry the Green Seal — they … Continue reading
