Building a Home-Based Business from the Ground Up – Part 2

In my last blog I talked about laying a foundation to your home-based business. This includes putting together a business plan that might include goals, what type of business you would like to run, what you hope to gain from it and other important issues to be considered. The foundation is really the idea behind your business. The more prepared you are (the more ideas you have) before you actually begin the building process, the better. This way you are prepared for obstacles that may come in the way and you stand a better chance at making this thing successful. … Continue reading

A (very) Brief Ethics of File Formats

I’m a bit of a free software activist. Okay, that was a bit of an understatement. I’m sort of a big free software activist. Big as in “I care a lot,” not in that I’m well known (I’m not). I’m not talking about price either (though that is a factor), I’m talking about freedom. Make a quick web-search for free/libre software to see what I’m talking about. At any rate, I have a very strong belief that this should be the software of education (and governments) for a variety of reasons. Others have said it better than me but I’m … Continue reading

How to Set Up a Homework Space

There will be many changes for your child to adjust to once the new school year is underway. The one thing that you can pretty much count on is that your child will end up with homework to do. This means you need to set up a good homework space for him or her to work in. Children who have special needs tend to thrive when they know that there is a routine to follow. They can predict what will happen next, and this can make transitioning from one activity to another a little bit easier. This means that it … Continue reading

Making Words For Your Scrapbook Layouts

Using words in your scrapbooking layouts is quite the rage right now. It is very in style and can tell a story without actual journaling. From dictionary definitions, to simple words throw around a layout, adding words or phrases can create an eye catching layout that simply makes the pages unique. Words, entire alphabets or just a portion of them, phrases and quotes can be incorporated into your scrapbook pages using such items as letter stickers, letter or word rub-ons and letter, word or phrase rubber stamps. You can also use your computer and printer to get the same effect … Continue reading

Is Instant Messaging Ruining My Kids’ Spelling and Grammar?

I understand that language is fluid and as much as we would like to pin it down to just exactly what is documented in the Oxford Dictionary–that is not the way our language works. There are always changes and adjustments and new words and slang being added–but I cannot help but wonder if the internet, specifically e-mail and instant messaging (not to mention “texting”) isn’t doing some serious damage to my children’s writing, grammar and spelling skills? Sure, my kids are fast typists or great at “keyboarding” as it is now called–but they are NOT writing in full sentences here! … Continue reading

The Word of the Year

If you have a teen who is obsessed with computer games then Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Year is one you are probably very familiar with… especially if they do a lot of winning. Three cheers for “W00t.” The hybrid of letters and numbers used by online game enthusiasts as a way to express happiness or victory, topped all other terms in the Springfield-based dictionary publisher’s online poll for the word that best sums up 2007. Must have been quite a year for gamers. Merriam-Webster’s president says he is pleased with the choice because it reflects the growing role technology plays … Continue reading

Tips for Teaching Ergonomics

In my last article, I discussed the fear that children who work long hours on a computer may develop trouble with calcification of their bones. I also talked about how a few schools are now addressing ergonomics in attempt to teach children the correct posture when operating a computer. However, many schools have not bought into the ergonomics program. If your child is not learning correct posture and computer health at his or her school, you can begin teaching it at home. Follow some the tips below. These are not only for children. I know I can benefit from some … Continue reading

Teaching Children Ergonomics

In some previous articles, I have discussed the controversy over teaching computer skills to young children. Most schools now have computer laborites and offer computer classes to children beginning in kindergarten. One concern brought up by technology hesitates, is the children’s health. One school in Redmond, Washington has decided that learning the basic keystrokes and mouse functions are not the only important concepts when it comes to technology. The school also teaches ergonomics. Ergonomics is a Greek word that relates work to the person. The concept of ergonomics is to help the user or worker learn to be comfortable and … Continue reading
