The Office Politics Game

Like it or not, most offices are full of some type of politics. Even non-traditional offices like a school for example, still require that you play the diplomat in political ‘games’. In my opinion, office politics is a rather disdainful term for savvy networking. When you play the “game” you are essentially learning the culture in which you’re working. I had fully intended to begin a series on how to handle sticky situations at work and happened across a game that teaches you how to play. . .office politics. It is a social dilemma game used by human resources departments … Continue reading

Surround Yourself with Safe People

We often talk about the importance of a support network for a single parent and it is imperative that we find friends and family who can lend a hand, offer support and encouragement, and bolster us in our lives as a single parent. It is also important, however, that we learn how to identify and choose “safe” people to support and love our families. Depending on where you are coming from in your life, it might be easy or challenging to choose safe people to surround yourself with. Some of us have strong and healthy boundaries already, or we are … Continue reading

The Disney Institute

Walt Disney World has a corner on the magic market. Not only are the Disney rides and food some of the world’s greatest, but their personnel, aka Cast Members, are some of the friendliest and most helpful in the world. This is not an accident. Disney takes great pains to train all of it’s employees to provide the very best customer service possible. Everyone from the princesses to the street sweepers, and even the cast members you never see, has been trained in the Disney manner of treating customers. This bit of Disney magic has not gone unnoticed by other … Continue reading

Digging for the Historic Truth on the History Channel

Last week on the Families.com homeschool blog, we discussed how watching certain television shows could actually be considered homeschooling. Homeschooling and Animal Planet discussed all of the science and animal care lessons my children have learned by watching Animal Planet. Learning with Food Network, by Karen Edmisten tells us how the Food Network is a “mainstay or TV viewing in (her) house.” This morning the Today Show profiled Josh Bernstien and his History Channel TV show, Digging for the Truth. Digging for the Truth is beginning its third season and each episode features an in depth archaeologically based analysis of … Continue reading

Homeschooling while pregnant

Recently, I posted about meeting, in general, the challenge of teaching various ages. I mentioned that so much comes down to me and to my attitude. When I can remain calm, patient, and flexible, our days are smoother and happier. But, exactly how does one go about achieving that patience and calm? Some days, such as the one I described (in which my four-year-old was dying for glitter) we just wing it and find a middle ground that works for everyone. It’s easier now than it was just a couple of years ago. (Four-year-olds, though mercurial, are much more reasonable … Continue reading

Health Care When Your Child Comes Home

One of the first things adoptive parents want to do when their baby or child comes home is go to a doctor for a full checkup. This way parents can have a baseline medical exam for their child and address any medical issues that were not detected before placement. If you are adopting a child from the foster care system, parents should be informed where the child has been getting health care. Some parents continue to use the same provider. Other parents ask to have the records sent to a doctor they choose. Adoptive parents should be given all the … Continue reading
