Co-Sleeping and SIDS

Ever since I have had babies, and even before that, SIDS is talked about to parents everywhere by their healthcare providers. And rightly so. SIDS, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, remains the number one cause of infant deaths. It is a scary thing for a parent to think about. The thought of an unexplained death of your precious baby is unimaginable, but it still happens. In the past, I haven’t worried about SIDS too much myself. I am careful about so many of the risk factors like making sure there aren’t too many blankets in the crib, not dressing my … Continue reading

The Next Step in Signing Up for Medicare Part B

My husband is in the process of signing up for Medicare Part B. The first step involves making a phone call. The second step involves filling out a form. It looks very simple. We are hoping that it will work out the way that we want it to. Medicare has four parts to it. My husband is currently getting Medicare Part A. This part has been called “hospital insurance”. It covers inpatient care in hospitals, inpatient care in skilled nursing facilities and hospices, and home health care services. There are two ways to be eligible for Medicare Part A. You … Continue reading

Medicare to Cover Obesity Screening and Counseling

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid have announced that Medicare will cover the cost for obesity screening. It is also going to cover the intensive behavioral counseling that will go along with the treatment for obesity. For years, we have all been hearing about how there is an obesity epidemic in the United States (and in several other countries). I think that the fact that Medicare is about to start covering the cost of obesity screening, and the corresponding behavioral counseling, is a clear sign that we truly do have a problem with obesity in America. Medicare is a public … Continue reading

Top 5 Most Depressing Jobs

Last week there was a local talk show on. One of the co-hosts on it was talking about an article she had read, which listed the jobs that cause the highest rates of severe depression. This list might surprise you…but it might also include your particular career. First on the list were those who work in nursing homes and childcare centers or homes. Taking care of the elderly and the very young comes with a great deal of responsibility, yet the pay doesn’t match it. I can attest to this, since I used to work as a preschool teacher in … Continue reading

Bathroom: An Easy Place to Declutter

If you need someplace to start in your decluttering, you might want to pick a bathroom. Usually the bathroom is an easy room to attack. Plus, since many medicines and cosmetics are kept here, decluttering the bathroom can also be very good for your health and the health of your family! Start with the easiest stuff, the half open bottles of shampoo and conditioner, the hair spray that you used once, the various potions and lotions and creams that got pushed to the back of the cabinet, drawer, or shelf. Next, attack any make up that might be in the … Continue reading

Spending Time With My Sister Part VI

On day five our our visit, we had planned to go for a walk around and older more affluent neighborhood and take some autumn inspired photos. Unfortunately when we awoke the next morning it was raining and much colder. Not exactly the ideal weather we were hoping we would have. So we modified our plans a little bit. We ate breakfast and did our dance cardio workout. Once the baby was good and fed. We made a picnic lunch of sandwiches, Greek yogurt, and grapes, and headed off to another mall that had a couple maternity boutiques. This mall was … Continue reading

Spending Time With My Sister Part II

On day two of our visit we awoke fairly early (probably due to the time difference) and I, of course, was starving. I had brought a cooler full of food with us, particularly breakfast food items for my daily three egg omelet. It was not apparent yet that my sister and her husband were awake yet so I prepared breakfast for my son and I during which our hosts awoke with their baby daughter! While my son and I ate our breakfast, the baby also had her breakfast and my sister’s husband made breakfast for the two of them. The … Continue reading

Soccer Mom Mistakes

I never dreamed of becoming a soccer mom. Yet, here I am prepping for yet another summer of nursing my kid’s scraped knees and bruised ego. The latter is inevitable when she doesn’t get to kick the winning goal or she gets the ball stripped by a member of the opposing team. She’s six. These things happen from time to time. Just as my daughter trips up every once in a while during a hotly contested match-up, this soccer mom makes a few flubs too. For example, I recently got schooled by my kid’s pediatrician after unabashedly admitting that I … Continue reading

What Do I Do When I Get Sick?

We all know that working from home has both benefits and drawbacks. Today, I am going to focus on one of the drawbacks of working from home – what happens when you are sick. Sure, summer is not yet over and the chilly days of winter have not yet arrived, but that does not mean that perfect health is guaranteed. A nasty head cold currently has me feeling like I am trapped inside my aching, stuffed up head. As much as I do not like to take cold medicine, I would normally take some on a day like this. However, … Continue reading

How Your Diet May Affect Your Child’s Food Preferences

Small children are notorious for being picky eaters, but some say that you may have an impact on just how picky your child is. Eating a healthy, varied diet during pregnancy, and continuing to eat various healthy foods during the first year of life, if you are nursing, exposes your child to many different flavors and encourages acceptance of new flavors and foods later on. During pregnancy, your baby is fed nutrients through the umbilical cord. At the same time, the amniotic fluid, which surrounds the baby, takes on the flavor of the foods you eat. Even though your baby … Continue reading
