Saving Money on Summer Escapes

When flying out of state for a family getaway not only do you have to deal with the cost of airfare and hotel accommodations, but in most case you also have to consider the price of a rental car… and record high gas prices. But not with these cool summer travel deals. The following hotel packages cater to families who are looking to explore virtually car-less destinations such as Nantucket, Catalina Island and Mackinac Island where two feet will get you farther than 4 wheels (which are banned in most of these vacation hotspots). NANTUCKET From now until October, The … Continue reading

Sick Day Survival Games

We haven’t been having much fun at my house this month. Instead, we’ve had one sick child after another. I’m always glad when they are feeling well enough to get restless. Here are some things we do on recovery days when they are feeling better, but still not up to par. I have a small dry erase board that is also a magnetic board. We have the low odor type of dry erase markers. The kids can draw, or if I have time we can play tic-tac-toe or dots. The magnetic part is fun, too. We have some architectural magnets, … Continue reading

The Ultimate Christmas Present for “Knight Rider” Fans

Is there anyone who watched the popular ’80s TV series “Knight Rider” and didn’t want to have a KITT car of their own? I remember watching the show as a kid with my brothers. During the commercial breaks my two oldest brothers would grab their own Hot Wheels vehicles and pretend the cars could talk just like the black 1984 Pontiac Trans Am that helped David Hasselhoff escape the bad guys on TV. If I were independently wealthy I would try to make my brothers’ boyhood dreams come true this Christmas by purchasing one of the original KITTs for them. … Continue reading

Can The Royals Finally Stop Running?

The British press is reporting that Prince William recently whisked girlfriend Kate Middleton to the scene of some of their first dates–the Highlands of Scotland. William and Kate are reportedly staying at Queen Elizabeth’s Balmoral estate where they are said to be engaging in their favorite field sports. It’s not earth-shattering news, but there are two points that intrigued me about the story. First, the young couple reportedly flew from London to Scotland on a British Airways flight and did not accept any special treatment. Which meant they were offered the same in-flight snack as all the other passengers–a choice … Continue reading

Hockey Night

We took my little lady to her first hockey game on Monday night. My childhood favorites, the Detroit Red Wings, were in town to battle our hometown Philadelphia Flyers and it seemed like a good opportunity to expose her to the spectacle of live ice hockey. Initially, we were planning on buying tickets in the Family Section of the Wachovia Center, which cost $20 for adults and $10 for kids. This section is located in the corner of the arena, in the upper level. Upon mentioning our plans to my brother, he produced four lower level seats 25 rows up … Continue reading

Photographic Lens Filters

My favorite photographic lens filter is the star. There are a couple brands on the market, Cokin and Tiffen come to mind. A star filter will take a single point of light and create a star effect. The single point of light could be a candle flame, a bright spot on a shiny surface or even a light at nighttime. It is a great way to enhance a photo by accentuating the light spot giving it a glimmering glamorous look. The flat optical filter has lines etched in it that diffracts the light from the light source along the lines … Continue reading

Slide Show DVD – Made My Mother In Law Cry

My husband, David finally sent the slide show DVD to his mother yesterday. One of the advantages of living near the FedEx hub in Memphis is we can ship anything and have it to its destination the next day. My mother in law received the DVD today. She called my husband at work crying. I knew it touched her to warrant a middle of the week daytime phone call. She told him she couldn’t believe that pictures would make her cry. My husband and I laughed for a few minutes that I was actually the good daughter in law for … Continue reading

Grandma Puts Baby Through Airport X-Ray Machine

It’s not exactly how you want to start off your holiday travels—taking your baby to the hospital. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what one woman had to do after she mistakenly put her 1-month-old grandson through an X-ray machine at Los Angeles International Airport earlier this week. According to police, a shocked security worker noticed the shape of a child on the carry-on baggage-screening monitor and immediately pulled him out. The infant was immediately rushed to a local hospital, where doctors determined he did not receive a dangerous dose of radiation. Airport officials are calling the incident “an innocent mistake by an … Continue reading

Visiting An Inflatable House of Horrors

You’ve heard of homes built of wood and brick. You may have even heard of structures made of clay and aluminum. But, how about a house made of a highly malleable but far less durable material: balloons. Leave it to New York’s Larry Moss to find a way to out do his wacky air-filled masterpieces. Moss’ website is filled with pictures of his balloon creations from humans to monsters, animals to food items. But even he admits his latest creation is one for the record books: a 10-room, 10,000-square-foot, walk-through haunted house made out of 130,000 latex balloons covering everything … Continue reading
