Summer Bummer: Poo in the Pool

One of the highlights of my family’s summer has been the near daily trips we’ve taken to our neighborhood swimming pool. Given that the summer of 2012 has been the hottest on record, I can’t tell you how grateful I am to live near this watery oasis of fun, especially since I parent a fish. Of course, I’m not the only mom who has made the pool a home away from home with her kids. In fact, with the record breaking heat wave we’ve endured this summer our pool has been packed to capacity on several occasions. The swarms of … Continue reading

Blowouts

Every parent dreads this moment. You smell something unusually stinky. You pick up your baby and you feel something damp on their leg or their back. You remove their pants and realize the poop is all over their clothes and up their back. You are afraid of opening the diaper but it is the inevitable next step. It is the infamous blowout and it happens to every baby. Sometimes the best thing to do is simply put the baby in the tub, because some messes just can’t be cleaned with wipes. Blowouts happen, so the best thing to do is … Continue reading

Thinking About Potty Training

One of the joys of toddlerhood is potty training. Oh joy! Most toddlers are potty trained before they’re three. However, some toddlers are ready earlier while others don’t show signs of being ready until much later. So what’s a parent to do? The child may not be able to enter preschool if he or she is not potty trained. That’s a huge incentive for the parents, but not necessarily the child. One of the signs of readiness is when the child doesn’t like wearing a dirty diaper. I’m so lucky. My daughter doesn’t care and fights changing. Strike one! Another … Continue reading

What is Elimination Communication?

Despite the lack of an exciting moniker, elimination communication is a pretty exciting business. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I learned that many cultures actually communicate with their babies about going to the bathroom and work with babies to use the potty before the babies can talk. I’d always assumed that my daughter would be in diapers – cloth diapers, yes, but diapers nonetheless. Now, elimination communication shouldn’t be confused with old-fashioned punitive methods that involved forcing babies and young toddlers to sit on the potty for a long time, trying to go to the bathroom. Elimination communication … Continue reading

Is Your Baby Constipated?

This morning I took my son in for his four month well baby appointment. Recently he has been fussing quite a bit and I’ve noticed he hasn’t had more than a single bowel movement over the course of an entire week. The pediatrician suggested I give him an ounce of prune juice mixed with an ounce of water. He tried about a half ounce of the mixture before refusing the rest. Hopefully, if he is in fact constipated, this will do the trick! Since babies can’t tell you what hurts, it’s hard to know whether your infant is suffering from … Continue reading

Green Beach Ideas

Here where I live in North Carolina, we are within reasonable driving distance of at least six beaches. But, some that I have gone to are not well taken care of by those visiting. I look around and see candy wrappers, cigarette butts, and water bottles everywhere. While you want to have fun at the beach, you can do it is a green way. What is some small things you can do to keep your beach looking beautiful? The most important thing is to keep the plastic at home. The Ocean Conservancy organized an international coastal cleanup and guess what … Continue reading

Student Get Arrested for Passing Gas and Other Weird School News

The Associated Press is reporting that earlier this week, one student in Florida was arrested for a very interesting crime. The 13-year-old boy, who attends Spectrum Junior-Senior High School, was said by authorities to be disrupting the classroom by intentionally passing gas and turning off the computers that other students were using. The boy was arrested by a school resource officer and then released to his mother. She must be so proud. While I am all for removing a student who is intentionally disruptive to the classroom, I wonder about the actual arrest. Teachers Served Laxative Cupcakes More students were … Continue reading

Infant Product Recall: Gas Relief Drops

Here is another recall, this time for infant gas relief drops. Johnson & Johnson is recalling one-once bottles of infants Mylicon gas relief drops in the non-staining version. There is a possibility that these drops might contain metal fragments that could have gotten into the product sometime during the manufacturing process. The recall includes more than 12,000 bottles of these infant gas relief drops. If you have these drops, stop using them immediately and call the manufacturer at 1-800-222-9435. They will tell you the details of the recall, including how to dispose of the infant gas relief drops and how … Continue reading

Fabulously Fun Halloween Desserts: Here Kitty, Kitty!

It’s a recipe that’s so incredibly clever (and delicious) that it has made its way to the top of the must-have dessert list at Halloween gatherings from coast-to-coast. Some call it Kitty Litter Cake, while others refer to it as Kitty Poo Cake or Kitty Dung Dessert. Regardless of its unappetizing name, it is always a hit with guests. I wish I knew who came up with the original recipe (somehow I doubt it’s Martha Stewart). I’d give them an A+ for creativity and a B+ for taste (you might give it an A, but I am not a big … Continue reading

Adopt a Shelter Dog Month: Getting Ready

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog month! If you’ve decided that this is the right time to add a four-legged family member, congratulations. Shelter pets are awesome… and yes, I’m biased because all of my pets have been rescues. Pet adoption isn’t an easy thing these days. A lot of shelters and rescues want to check vet references, meet the entire family, and may even want to visit your home! Dogster.com (one of my favorite pet sites) polled nearly 200 shelters and came up with a great list of things to think about before you adopt a dog or cat. … Continue reading
