Oh No, We Won Best New Artist – Part 1

I often wonder if this is what a singer or band thinks when they win this award. After all, many have received the Best New Artist award only to go on to … obscurity. Oh sure, they may still put out records or tour, but somehow they never live up to the potential that is associated with the Best New Artist moniker. I know you are thinking “Libby, give us some examples,” so give I shall. Here are some of the MTV Video Music Awards Best New Artist (BNA) winners that charted higher before their award than they did afterwards: … Continue reading

Sweat All You Want–This Shirt Won’t Stink

I have completed four marathons, but I sweated more giving birth to my daughter than in all of the races combined. I don’t remember anyone telling me that I smelled bad, but I’m sure I did. It’s the same way when you go to the gym… while it may be hard to admit, sometimes deodorant doesn’t always work. Enter the newly designed “sweet smelling athletic gear.” It promises to emit a pleasant scent… rather than body odor. Let’s face it, sweat smells. Even if you don’t hit the gym yourself, if you have boys who play hard, you know they … Continue reading

Day 6: The Diary of an Overweight Mom—When The Scale Won’t Cooperate

Morning Weight 181.0 (UP 4 ounces from yesterday) My scale disappointed me today—betrayed me even. Here I thought she was my friend, consistently showing lower numbers every morning, allowing me to feel that inner joy that only comes with knowing you’re on the right path. But today—today I woke to the sun filtering through my window. I yawned. I stretched. I made my way over my kids’ toys to the bathroom. I peeled off my nightgown (because, really, do you think I’d weigh myself with my clothes ON? No way) and I stepped on the scale. I looked down. I … Continue reading

Fun Websites: iWon

When I graduated from college my official life plan was to win the lottery. If that fell through I was going to find a nice rich man, preferable one who lived In England who would like to support me and take me on fantastic European vacations. If Plans A and B fell through I would resort to Plan C: get a real job. Currently on Plan C, I’m still kind of hoping Plan A or B will become a possibility in the near future. That hope is part of what draws me to websites where I have the opportunity to … Continue reading

In Case You Were Wondering….

I’ve been away since Wednesday on a quick, long weekend getaway to Florida, taking the girls to see Grandma and Grandpa. We had a great trip; at one point my oldest was dancing in front of the bathroom mirror and shouting, “this is the best time of my life!!” There was much to enjoy on this short weekend away — the home-cooking from Grandma, fishing on the pier with Grandpa, the walks around the lake by their condo complex, the beach, the pool, the ride on my wife’s uncle’s boat, and for the girls, tv, tv, and more tv, from … Continue reading

Fewer Babies? Blame It on the Economy

Would you let the economy dictate how many children you have, or if you have children at all? For many couples, the poor state of the economy has forced them into remaining childless, even through they have always dreamed of having children, they say. If you’ve noticed fewer babies and young children at the park lately, you aren’t imagining things. According to the Centers of Disease Control, the U.S. fertility rate has dropped sharply since the country went into recession (2007), and it shows no signs of bouncing back any time soon. Experts predict that when the economy does eventually … Continue reading

Jewel-Osco Drops Their Preferred Card

Another major grocery store has decided to say goodbye to its Preferred Card. Albertson’s has done it. Now, Jewel-Osco has done the same thing. Does your family shop for groceries at one of these stores? If so, you won’t have to dig through your purse for the Preferred Card anymore. Loyalty cards were once a hot item. I cannot recall exactly when, but all of a sudden, it seemed like every grocery store had its own, special, loyalty card. The purpose of it was to reward customers who were frequent shoppers by giving them exclusive deals. In general, loyalty cards … Continue reading
