Using Photography in Your Homeschool

I have this obsession. I have transferred this obsession over to a few of my children over the years. One child in particular believes she has surpassed her mother’s talent. Two of my children love being the subject of my obsession while one wishes we would just get rid of the monkey on our backs. Well, I’m rather attached to my monkey. Have you met my monkey? His name if Fred. He drives me to take pictures whenever and wherever I can. One of my daughter’s has a monkey driving her in the same direction and lately they have been fighting to be the alpha monkey. Photography. In my home, there are two kinds of people. The two kids are people who take the pictures and the people who are in the pictures.

How does this relate to homeschooling?

Photography can be used to many purposes from chronicling the homeschool day, the nature walk or encouraging a child to be creative or even point a child in a career. In addition, it makes a lovely family activity which can last for years to come. We use photography in the same way many use markers and paper.

What I have done to a make it more special?

It should not surprise you to learn that I love to showcase photos throughout my home. I am not a photographer and only have a point and shoot camera but that does not stop me from making my home a mini museum. One of our favorite ways to display our pictures is to make canvas prints. Despite my having a heart for photography but not the skill set, I have beautiful canvas prints of my children and our homeschooling experience on my walls. Rather than purchasing expensive art work, I take pictures of my children on field trips, reading, spending time together, or doing school work and display them proudly. Filling my home with these memories is special and it serves as a reminder of the blessings we gain from homeschooling. Since my oldest child has developed a love for photography as well, I have displayed her favorite photos in a collage on a gallery wrap canvas in our living room. You cannot put a price on the amount of encouragement that brings to a child and joy to the parent to have a memento of special times.

How do you make your house into a mini museum?

For my printing needs I use Easy Canvas Prints. Why? As the name suggests it is easy. One feature I adore is the page where you chose your print size. To give you an idea on how large or small the print will be it places the print above an image of a couch that represents one which is seven feet across. The prices are reasonable and the processing time and delivery is fast. I also love how everyone who sees my daughter’s print is impressed with her photography skills which are no doubt enhanced by the quality of the print. So with all the memories and joy photography has brought to my homeschool I wanted to share with you and your budding photographer that anyone who “Likes” Easy Canvas Prints on Facebook will get free shipping and half off their first canvas. I gave this tip to a friend and she surprised her daughter with a canvas of a picture her daughter took. Her daughter was so thrilled and encouraged with this gesture. Photography captures the heart and sharing it with you is a joy so I hope you find a way to incorporate the beauty in your homeschool. You do not need to be an expert as I mentioned I have a simple Canon PowerShot and we make works of art every day.
