With the price of gas soaring like a bar-headed goose on the loose, you might consider sticking closer to home this spring break.
Of course, hanging around in your own neck of the woods doesn’t have to be a death sentence. After all, the United States offers a slew of exciting travel attractions during the first season of the year that your entire family will love attending. For example:
Chicago: During the city’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration the local plumber’s union dyes the Chicago River green. The event is followed by the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade through Grant Park. Both events take place on the Saturday closest to the actual St. Patrick’s Day and are free to the public. The best places to see the annual river dying are the East side of the Michigan Avenue Bridge, the West side of the Columbus Drive Bridge or upper and lower Wacker Drive between Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive.
Austin: Springtime in Austin is warm, sunny and laid back. The city is known as the “Live Music Capital of the World” and you’ll see why once you tour the downtown area. That’s where you’ll find more than 100 venues to shake and shimmy the night away. Also, this year’s SXSW Festival takes place from March 9-18.
Boston: If you are going to be near Beantown next month, then head to the city’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration. It’s steeped in history and features a massive parade dedicated to honoring all things Irish. The parade has been marching since 1901, and this year, organizers are expecting more than 650,000 people to watch a dizzying array of pipe bands, floats and dancers make their way from Broadway to Thomas Park, Telegraph Street, and end in Andrew Square.
Montreal: If you can’t make it to Ireland for St. Paddy’s Day, then consider traveling to Canada. Montreal is home to the longest running St. Patrick’s Day parade in Canada. Tens of thousands of spectators will line Fort and Ste-Catherine Streets to see Irish eyes smiling.
