The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Weight Loss

This has been an interesting week for me with a few different ups and downs. Feel free to play some mood music from your favorite western movie, in the background as you read this. “Doodeedeedoo Wah, wah wah.”

The Good

I had a particularly great exercise day on Saturday. With no where pressing that we needed to be, I was able to walk and run for a longer time period, proving to myself that I could do it. I was also able to relax and not be so stressed about getting back on time in the morning to shuffle my eldest off to school, my husband off to work, the little kids up for the day, and everyone fed and dressed.

I’ve been pulling things out of my closet that I haven’t worn in a while because, well, it feels good to get out of sloppy clothes or clothes that are just too familiar. I decided to wear some dress pants and a top to church. Imagine my delight and surprise when the pants were so large on me that they were falling down (they did start out a little big, but I could wear them).

Another good was a spontaneous visit from a couple good friends that we hadn’t seen in a while. She is on weight watchers and has already lost 40 pounds. We had lunch on the grill, chicken and corn on the cob, and then topped it off by a long walk.

The Bad

The bad was probably all of the butter that I added to the corn cobs before they were put on the grill. This is pretty much the only way I know how to do them, so I need to adopt some new recipes. When we got back from our walk, there was desert to be had: fresh exotic cupcakes from their local bakery. Because of the extra exercise, we could indulge mostly guilt free. I’m trying not to look at food as “bad,” rather as opportunities for choice.

I’m still not counting calories, just looking at my choices and portions a little more closely. A half a bagel with cream cheese (yes, our friends brought bagels, too) is just as satisfying as a whole one, especially when I add a glass of skim milk.

The Ugly

I have two ugly moments this week. The first is the angry yellow jacket that decided to attack my head as I passed by on my morning workout. Ouch!

The second ugly is obsessing over my mommy belly. After three kids, my middle resembles more unbaked bread dough than washboard these days.
