Oh those wonderful widgets! One of the first things that people tend to do when they get a new Mac is to go crazy downloading widgets, those cute and useful little programs that are so much fun to use.
More and more widgets are coming out each day. They are created by people all over the world to do everything from time your eggs to give you solid financial advice. Some of these widgets are truly amazing, while others, well, let’s just say they haven’t yet built that better mousetrap.
I thought I would start a new series here in the Computing Blog that highlights some of the available widgets, along with reviews, requirements and links. We’ll call it “Wednesday Widgets,” just because I like the alliteration.
So for our first review, I thought I would highlight a little widget that could. It is called “Photo Drop.” This useful widget allows you to do some basic photo editing right on your desktop. You can resize or trim a photo in about 10 seconds, eliminating the need to launch a huge photo editing program.
Photo Drop is so simple to use. You simply drop or paste a photo into its window, do your resizing and trimming and then click the “Done” button. The widget then asks you if you would like to save your image to your desktop or copy it to the clipboard. You can also drag your finished image to another application or widget. This widget will also take a photo of your desktop, but since a quick key-combo on the Mac has been doing that for ages, I can’t see the added value.
I liked the fact that the editing was so easy. Most of the time, all I really need to do is size or trim a photo, and this widget is a quick way to do it. I have to admit that I did have some trouble with the dragging part. When you are in dashboard mode, it is hard to get the desktop (where you have a photo) to be recognized. No matter how many times I tried to drag my image, it just didn’t want to go. I had much more luck with first copying the image to my clipboard (apple-C), launching my dashboard and then pasting the image into Photo Drop. That problem aside, it is a useful little program.
