Celebrity Good News/Bad News: Winona Ryder and Wayne Newton

Die-hard Trekkies have yet another hint of what’s to come in the upcoming “Star Trek” film.

According to “Variety,” Winona Ryder has just signed on to play the Vulcan mother of young Spock in the highly anticipated movie being directed by J.J. Abrams. The actress will reportedly squeeze her “Star Trek” scenes in between shooting another movie “Private Lives of Pippa Lee” and promoting her recently completed role in “The Informers.”

If you haven’t been keeping up with my blogs then you might not know that the latest “Star Trek” movie takes place during the crew’s early days at the Starfleet Academy. It will also star Chris Pine as Capt. Kirk, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy, and Eric Bana as Nero, the villain.

On a much sadder note former “Dancing with the Stars” contestant Wayne Newton has been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy—-a viral infection to the heart.

The legendary entertainer recently went public with his condition and announced that the ailment is forcing him to cancel a two-month engagement at Harrahs in Las Vegas AND more notably (at least to DWTS fans) he will not be performing in the upcoming “Dancing” finale (though, he told news reporters he plans to be in the audience).

Despite the bad news about his health, Newton insists he’s “going to be just fine.” Though, he did reveal that his doctors are concerned given that he has suffered with the condition in the past after having contracted a virus in 2001 in Afghanistan while performing as part of a USO tour.

“Mr. Las Vegas” says he is treating his malady as “another bump in the road” and is confident that he will be fully recovered by Valentine’s Day.

In the meantime, Newton, who already filmed a segment for Ellen DeGeneres as part of her upcoming TBS special, “Ellen’s Really Big Show,” says he has no plans to cancel his singing performances on a portion of the “Dancing with the Stars” tour, which starts next month.
