MHB Supports Parents Who Are LGBT

MHB (Men Having Babies, Inc.) is a nonprofit organization that was spun off in July 2012 from a program that ran at the NYC LBGT Center since 2005. It started as a peer support network for biological gay fathers and fathers-to-be, offering monthly workshops and an annual seminar.

Over time, elaborate online resources were developed, the group’s mailing list expanded to thousands of couples and singles from around the world, and it teamed up with LGBT family associations to develop similar programs in Chicago, San Francisco, LA, Miami, Dallas, Tel Aviv, Taipei and Brussels.

MHB’s mission includes:

The provision of educational and practical information to assist prospective parents who are gay, queer, or bisexual men, as well as trans women achieve biological parenting.

Promoting ethical surrogacy practices that minimize the risks and maximize the potential short and long-term benefits to all involved.

Promoting the affordability of surrogacy related services through advocacy, financial assistance, and the encouragement of transparency and patient feedback.

Raising awareness about the potential benefits and meaningful relationships surrogacy arrangements can bring about.

Encourage and support additional medical and social science research to better understand the motivations, experiences, and outcomes of surrogates and egg donors so as to guide best practices across all professional disciplines.

The international nonprofit Men Having Babies (MHB) is dedicated to providing gay men with educational and financial support to achieve parenthood through surrogacy. MHB’s annual conferences, workshops, and webinars provide over two thousand attendees worldwide with unbiased guidance and access to a wide range of relevant service providers.

MHB focuses on surrogacy. That said, the existence of this nonprofit organization could open people’s eyes to the fact that some men want to be parents.

One vivid example is the current Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg who is the first openly gay person confirmed to serve in a president’s Cabinet. He and his husband Chasten welcomed Penelope Rose and Joseph August Buttigieg to their family in September or 2021. The twins were adopted by the couple.

Parenting can be hard, and joyous, and potentially both at the same time. It is not something that should be kept back from people because of their gender or sexual identity. MHB could be a good starting point for couples who want to become parents.
