Fit Mind, Fit Body

Did you know that a fit body and a fit mind go hand-in-hand? True overall health includes not just your physical health but your mental health as well. I have been reading several articles over the course of the past month that pertains to mental health. Not only are we seeing Americans struggle with physical issues—cancer, diabetes, heart disease—but many are also dealing with mental health issues. Some blame poor physical health. After all, if you suffer from a physical ailment, you are more susceptible to becoming depressed. Others blame our economy. People are without jobs, struggling financially and so … Continue reading

Channeling Anxiety Through the Body: Rita’s Story

It’s challenging enough dealing with the anxiety that lives in our minds. But when it is channeled through the body – as it always is – anxiety works us over double time. Sometimes it manifests as a tightness in the gut, or clenching of the teeth or hands. Over time, though, anxiety takes a more dangerous toll on our physical sides, from ulcers and panic attacks, to high blood pressure and heart attacks. What’s worse is when we add fuel to the fire, treating our bodies in ways that only make anxiety worse. Rita knows this all too well. Promptly … Continue reading

Diary of a Work At Home Mom Part 14

There are times when it seems as though I get absolutely nothing accomplished. I am sure that I am not the first home-based professional parent to feel this way, nor will I be the last. At times like this I wonder, am I really that bad at managing time that I am not getting anything done or am I getting things done but not things that are readily quantifiable or things that society assigns a high level of importance to. Fortunately, I believe that the latter is the case because I do not sit on my bottom all day eating … Continue reading

Addiction and Depression

Those of us who work in the mental health field are not surprised when research articles are published “proving” things we already believe are true. Sometimes I read through articles and think, ‘Duh, that’s obvious”. I realized today, though, that it may not be obvious to everyone. Sometimes I forget that my knowledge base came from 8 years of school and 10 years of practice – something my husband likes to remind me of when I am spouting off numbers. It hit home when I was speaking to my daughter about the research on marriage happiness – what seemed obvious … Continue reading

What Would You Do to Be Skinny?

What would you do to be skinny? Well according to a survey done by Fitness magazine, 51% of the 2,400 women asked would give up sex for an entire year in exchange for being skinny. So is this an indication of a true lack of interest in sex or does it go deeper than that? Could it really be that women value a skinny body so much so that they would give up intimacy with another? Sadly, many women equate happiness with weight loss. “If only I could lose this extra weight, then I would be happy.” Yet time and … Continue reading

Teaching Your Children Respect

The concept of respect is one that is absolutely crucial for our children to understand. Our society is drifting further away from the basic ideas of courtesy. It used to be that children addressed their elders as “ma’am” and “sir.” Back-talk simply was unheard of. And if a child did slip, well, there was a willow branch switch waiting for them behind the woodshed. As the years have gone by and lawmakers have sought to stamp out child abuse, discipline has taken on a different form. In many ways, this has been good for us, as parents have turned to … Continue reading

When Your Chronically Ill Child Rebels

As a parent of a child with a chronic, life-threatening condition, I know how hard it can be when she fights her treatments or medication. It is frustrating, because you know she needs it. It is heart breaking because you hate that she needs it. In addition, you feel torn between forcing her and just giving in this one time. But it is never just one time. Children with chronic conditions go through a lot of stress and grown-up issues, more than most people can imagine. And they deal with this illness every single day of their lives. Treatments often … Continue reading

Depression- part 2

Yesterday we looked at dealing with depression and what you can do if your spouse is suffering from depression. Here are some more thoughts on the subject. Don’t be afraid to get professional help. Too often people can be embarrassed or made to feel they should be able to deal with things. This is especially true in Christian circles. There seems to be an idea that Christians should never suffer depression because they are Christian. That is not recognizing that depression is a medical condition, an illness that needs treating. So find a psychologist who can help you. If you … Continue reading

The Risks of Not Knowing You’re Pregnant (Part 2)

Yesterday I talked about the risks of not knowing you are pregnant, as is in the case of the women on the show I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant. I talked about the risks associated with continuing birth control or not taking prenatal vitamins during pregnancy. Turns out the risks associated with not taking prenatal vitamins are low if you are eating a well balanced diet. Taking birth control during pregnancy does pose a risk, but not in terms of birth defects. Today I’m going to talk about the risks associated with drinking alcohol, smoking, and risky activity, such as … Continue reading
