Having Trouble Sleeping? (2)

In our previous blog on better sleeping habits (see link below), we looked at the importance of getting up at the same time each day, including weekends, and the detrimental effects of electronic appliances such as televisions in the bedroom. Today we’ll look at more tips for getting the health and beauty sleep that you need. 3. Declutter your bedroom Is your bed a rumpled mess with sheets half pulled off and blankets tossed onto the floor? Does the rest of your bedroom look like a hurricane’s been through it? Be honest, would you have trouble knowing whether a burglar … Continue reading

Slowing Down and Meditating

As members of the church we are counseled to care for our bodies. The fact that we view our bodies as gifts from our Heavenly Father helps us to realize the importance for caring for our bodies properly. Usually when we think of caring for our body we think of doing more, but today I am going to talk about doing less. It is true that we need to exercise. We need to eat healthy food and avoid sweets. We also need to make sure that we get plenty of rest. However I think it is too easy to ignore … Continue reading

Sleep Deprivation: Six on Sunday

Sleep deprivation is inevitable for parents. Let’s be realistic, while it may seem that sleep deprivation is the province of new moms, sleep deprivation chases you throughout baby hood into toddler hood and further still. So since we’re pretty sure that sleep deprivation is going to be inevitable, let’s take our Six on Sunday and establish why it’s a positive thing that sleep deprivation happens. Yes, I am serious. We can make anything into a positive, it’s just a matter of how you look at it. Perspective is important for everything we do – whether it’s our work ethic, toughing … Continue reading

Tools of the Trade

Each of us has certain items that we rely on day in and day out to keep our home based businesses going. The collection of items that you depend on to help you get the job done will vary depending upon what you do for work. Today, I realized that some of the items that I depend on do not exactly fit the traditional description of essential office equipment. There are plenty of things that I use that are things that one would expect to find in a writer’s workplace or a law office. My laptop and cell phone are … Continue reading

Making the Most of What You Have

I recently read a book where the author was sharing her experience of moving the family from what was their “white picket fence” home to a practically dilapidated one. It was met with a lot of anger from her teenage sons. She had torn them from the comforts of their home, friends and a familiar neighbor to the middle of nowhere. They were living in a house that could have almost been condemned. Then they decided to tear the whole thing down and build new. While they did that, they had to live with the grandparents for several months. Eventually … Continue reading

Water Baby

Water can be a calming force of nature. Water is the source of origin for continued life. Without water we cannot survive. Aside from the first parents, all human beings begins life’s journey through water. My daughter was no different, she spent the first nine months of her in utero life in warm life sustaining and protecting water. She knows the security of water as much as she knows security in my arms. With this understanding of the importance of water to my daughter’s life and my own pain-relieving comfort from water, I chose to birth my daughter in a … Continue reading

The “Morning Person” Gene Has Been Discovered

Are you a “Morning Person”, or a “Night Owl”? Whatever your answer to that question happens to be, it is due to your genes. Scientists have discovered a gene that influence sleep duration. This could help explain why some people find that they are much sleepier during the day than they are at night. I am definitely not a morning person. I would much rather do my work late in the evening, (and into the wee hours of the morning). I have problems waking up earlier than noon, even if an alarm is set. Sometimes, I wonder if my chronic … Continue reading

Guilty Pleasures

In the beginning, I was lost when Hailey was with her father. I missed her from the second he picked her up until the second he brought her home. I would call several times, I could tell it was making her a little crazy but I had never been without her and wasn’t sure what to do with myself. I used to wander around the apartment, cleaning things that were clean, organizing things that didn’t need organizing, running to the store to buy Hailey a treat for when she got home. Even thought my daughter wasn’t physically there, taking care … Continue reading

Building Character: Travel

What can travel teach you? One of the joys of home learning is that you can travel without the burden of a traditional school schedule on your shoulders. Visit national monuments in May? Why not? Head south of the Equator in January? Certainly! Travel is also a teacher. Through travel, children experience new places and cultures. They learn the importance of scheduling – not missing trains. They learn the importance of enjoying the moment – the opportunity to try a new food that you might never encounter again. But let’s crib off Seligman and Peterson’s Character Strengths and Virtues for … Continue reading

When Sickness Prevents You from Exercising

The past week and a half has been a bit frustrating for me. For the second time in a year, I have costochondritis, which is inflammation in the area surrounding the upper ribs/breastbone. It feels like you are having heart attack symptoms. I am apparently one of those cases with an “unknown” cause, since I haven’t been sick and I haven’t experienced any trauma to my chest. Treatment consists of anti-inflammatory medication and rest….sigh. It’s really frustrating when you have been on a regular schedule with exercise, or if you had fallen off the routine but were finally back on … Continue reading
