If you grew up attending Young Women’s or have served as a young women’s leader, then you should know the theme that is recited every Sunday. The theme is a wonderful thing that explains the purpose of the Young Women’s organization, which is basically to prepare young women to serve in the church and attend the temple.
Several years ago the line “Strengthen home and family” was added to the last paragraph of the theme. This is a powerful statement and an important change. When I was a teenager I gave little thought to my future family or even how my actions were affecting my immediate family. I think that if the theme had had the line at the time, I would have thought about it more.
Young Women’s really is designed to give the young women the skills that they will need in order to be a successful wife and mother. It is also important for the women to realize the importance of their roles as wife and mother. Many of the lessons on Sunday teach about how to create a peaceful home by putting the gospel first in your life. The lessons also address how to communicate in your family and the importance of showing appreciation to those around you.
As I look back at my time in Young Women’s I am grateful for the experiences that I had there. I learned how to thread a needle, sew, decorate a cake and basic first aid skills at Young Women’s. I also had the opportunity to learn to deal with differences. My testimony was also strengthened through the many spiritual experiences I had.
The Personal Progress and the lessons each Sunday are designed to help the young women learn the skills necessary to survive in the world. The lessons teach spiritual skills as well as those involved in homemaking. It is wonderful that every young woman will have the opportunity to learn these things before they move out on their own.
