Family Home Evening: Working Together as a Family

This family home evening lesson is based on ways that you can help your family put the family first in their priorities and life. You may need to adapt the lesson according to your individual needs as a family. Be sure to start the lesson with a prayer and a song. You may also want to share a favorite scripture with your family.

Begin your lesson by asking your family how a car works. When they explain, ask them if it would work if it were missing the engine or the fuel pump or the starter motor. Explain that each part of the car needs to work in order for the car to work at all. Then explain that the family is the same way. Each person in the family has a responsibility to the family in order for it to run properly.

Ask each family member to list things that they are responsible for in your family. A good idea is to include any chores that they are responsible for, but you should also include things like love and support each other, and being king to one another. Then ask your children what happens if one of the parts of the family isn’t working. The family doesn’t go along as well.

Ask your family how they can show love and support to each other. You may talk about watching each others’ sports events or recitals, or helping each other with their homework. You can also talk about doing things to help each other out without being asked to do anything. This can help to increase the family unity.

As an activity you may want to play a game that you need to work together to win. Or you can work together on a project that the family has wanted for a long time like a tree house or painting the playroom. This will give your kids the chance to work together and support each other.

As you end the night close with a prayer and a song. You may want to take time to express how much you appreciate each of your children individually through the next week. Be sure to enjoy some refreshments as a family.
